Skilled Maintenance Expert

 

Looking for a jack-of-all trades to perform a wide variety of maintenance tasks including but not limited to: HVAC, electrical, plumbing, equipment repair, carpentry, painting, and more. Self- reliant, problem solvers, who are able to fix the problem correctly the first time, will excel in this environment. Will be responsible for ensuring that all centers and equipment are properly maintained to assure the facilities are safe, in solid working condition, and in compliance with all codes and regulations. Pay commensurate with skill set and demonstrated experience.

 

Performs troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance on the following:

 

  • Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning: inspecting all wiring, connections, and electrical controls; testing: shut off control, starting cycle, system pressure; evaluating wear and tear, noises, damage; inspecting duct work for: leaks, holes, or areas where seams may not be properly joined; checking: compressors, refrigerant tubing, outdoor fan motors, indoor blower assembly and blades; inspecting: condensate drains, drain pans, and refrigerant levels; cleaning indoor evaporator units and outdoor condenser coils; and other troubleshooting and preventative maintenance tasks such as: replacing parts, changing filters, etc. 

 

  • Electrical: performs electrical installation and repair work in wiring for: switches, outlets, plugs, cables, power circuits and appliances; repairs lighting systems; inspects electrical systems for unsafe conditions. Also repairs and maintains fire and security alarms/panels, and activates and deactivates building alarms and responds to alarm calls during and after regular work hours.

 

  • Plumbing: Identifies and perform repairs on plumbing issues including but not limited to: running water lines, troubleshooting drain issues, solving plumbing leaks or breaks, unclogging lines and drains, replacing washers and other parts, and maintaining and monitoring septic systems.

 

  • Carpentry: Completes carpentry work in construction and repair of structures and equipment such as: partitions, walls, doors, fences, window frames, furniture, roofs, shelves, adjustments of locks on doors, cabinets, desks, closets, door hinges, etc.

 

  • Painting tasks: applying and preparing various surfaces for paint, enamel, lacquer, varnish, or stain; repairing wall coverings, dry walling, spackling, and the like.

 

  • Grounds Maintenance: maintains grounds in clean and orderly manner including trimming, weeding, aerating and fertilizing lawns; replaces plants as needed; sets sprinklers; replaces broken sprinkler heads; adjusts automatic time clocks and system pressure if necessary; maintains grounds maintenance equipment; trims tree branches that create hazardous situations; installs and maintains drinking fountains; repairs/replaces hot water heaters.

 

  • Maintains assigned vehicle, tools and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability in safe operating condition. Also transports a variety of tools, equipment and supplies for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.

 

  • Is able to complete miscellaneous tasks such as: laying tile, waxing floors, carpet cleaning and repair, servicing of appliances and equipment, moving furniture, setting up desks, cubicles and partitions, etc. for the purpose of ensuring a healthy, clean and safe environment for the students, families, and staff.

 

  • Oversees preventive maintenance and emergency repair of electrical systems, refrigeration equipment, HVAC equipment, plumbing, pest management, etc.

 

  • Ensures compliance with regulatory and company safety policies and procedures within maintenance department at all times.

 

  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with, and maintaining comprehensive records regarding, all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and requirements.

 

  • Must be well versed in: reading a variety of manuals, writing documents following prescribed formats, presenting information to others, and understanding complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Microsoft Office experience is also required: Word, Excel, and Outlook. 

 

  • Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; developing effective working relationships; displaying mechanical aptitude; working under time constraints; and complying with Safari Childcare policies and regulations.

 

  • Must be proactive in identifying problems, informing management when necessary, and should exercise discretion in identifying projects requiring the services of a higher skilled crafts person. 

 

  • Adherence to “safety first” in addressing safety issues related to employees, equipment and/or the facilities.

 

Ideal candidate will be willing to persevere in solving problems until the task at hand is complete. This may include participation in: meetings, workshops, trainings, internet searches, calling support lines, etc. Must be willing to respond to emergency situations during and after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in skilled trades, power and hand tools, etc.; adhering to safety practices; handling hazardous materials; and planning and managing projects.

 

Position Requirements: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: lifting 100lbs or more, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.

 

Education, Training, and Experience: Any combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates ability to perform the duties and responsibilities as described including related work experience in one or more of the building trades.

 

Knowledge of: Methods used in maintenance including but not limited to the following trades: HVAC, electrical wiring, carpentry, plumbing, painting, grounds keeping, appliance repair; standard practices and tools used in the maintenance and repair of building facilities; safety practices and procedures related to the building trades; basic math to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

 

Skill and Ability to: Effectively use a variety of hand and power tools; read blueprints; review and identify projects needed to be serviced by outside contractors or vendors; follow oral and/or written instructions; communicate effectively in both oral and written form; maintain work logs; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work assignments.

 

Other Qualifications: Possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license and clean driving record, willingness to work outside (if necessary) in inclement weather, ability to work around/ near children.

 

Experience/Skill Requirements: 10 years experience with hands-on maintenance tasks

 

Education/Certifications: Bachelor's degree in related field preferred and/or equivalent experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
